Gonna give it a try Thursday, Don.  My endfed tuned up on 6, so we will see.  If not,  I'm gathering components to build a rigid 1/4 wave dipole.

Thanks, I remember seeing the word Poly Variable but did not make the connection. Know I understand, the clock radio have many variable such as LED clock time, AM, FM Radio, volume control, on and off switch, time and hour function, so this box take care of all those variable. Hey got me a nice little gadget from the radio, the power cord has it’s own power source and the book show how to make a light bulb burn using this power source. This is great stuff. Thanks for the information. I sent you an e-mail via QRZ about an hour or so ago.

Thanks again

Poly Variable capacitor. It has more than 1 variable capacitor in the box, to allow tuning of different parts of the radio circuit at the same time.

This is AA7QQ. Please send your email & I will call this evening. I live about 2 minutes from you.

Hello everyone, this weekend I decided to take apart a clock radio that has went to radio heaven. The circuit board has a 1x1x1x1 clear square with many components inside. On the circuit board it has PVC-which I think it means Power Voltage Control. After looking at Chapter 7 of the ARRL 2020 Communication Book, I am still not sure what PVC stands for. I have attached a photo. Feedback most welcome.

Thanks

Good Job with the on air meeting tonight!

Just a little funny,  the first time I went down to the meeting in PG,  the xyl asked why we weren't having the meetings on the radio.

Anyway, well done!

Greetings,

In addition to the two links already posted on tonight's meeting subject, I would also recomment, at your convenience the below Youtube video which describes the beginning and basic concepts of the underlying JS8Call prigram.  Those who have tried it are amazed the way it allows 2-way chat and messaging around the world with low power and minimal antennas.  Enjoy.

JS8Call.com is the site for information and download links for the program.

Be sure to join us on the WX4E repeater system on Thursday evening at 7:00 pm

We will hold our regular monthly meeting "On-the-Air" as we gather around the glow of our radios.
Here is some information that will help you as we work through our meeting.

  • You will find the March 2020 Treasurer's Report in the Members Only Section.
  • Also, you will find a video link here for Emergency Communications - COVID-19
Using JS8 for emergency communications holds a number of advantages over other means and modes.  This idea can also allow us to test our capabilities on 6-meters and compare the results to our voice efforts.
  • And for your home entertainment during confinement, you might enjoy OH8STN's Winter Field Day - Off the Grid.

We look forward to hearing from you On the Air!

Wanted to send out some notes prior to the CARS "on-the-air" meeting Thursday evening.  You can read these at your leisure and I will highlight these during the meeting.

6 Meter USB Net:
KG5RVW will be hosting a 6 meter USB net, beginning Thursday, 16 April, 7:00 PM Eastern time.  Plan is to conduct the net twice per month, 1st and 3rd Thursdays.  Operating frequency will be 50.200 (+/- if we have to shift to avoid interference).  More info will follow in another message.

Field Day - With the uncertainty of COVID-19 and how long the social distancing rules will be in effect, we are looking at several possible plans including:

   a)  Circumstances permitting, a full blown operation, multiple stations, lots of operators, lots of food, and lots of fun (similar to Winter Field Day).

  b)  Very small scale operation, one transmitter station, limited number of operators on site at any given time.

  c)  People who want to participate will need to operate from their home QTH on an individual basis.

We'll develop multiple plans for the various scenerios and as we know more about how things will turn out, we will let you know.

Future Planned Activities:  Even though we are stuck at home with "social distancing", we can still plan for the time when life gets back to "normal" and we can go out and have fun.  A few events that are being worked on, with dates to be set sometime in the future include:

Field Antennas, Part I:  Meet at a park, bring your field antennas, transceiver will be available so you can set up and test your field antennas (home brew or newly bought).

Field Antennas, Part II:  Different operators set up in multiple parks/locations for operations.  Everyone else can travel from park to park, checking out different set ups, and seeing how easy it would be to set up in a park.  Especially good for those folks who live in antenna restricted areas.

Fox Hunt:  A fun exercise.  Try to find a hidden transmitter using direction finding techniques.  A major sport in some areas.  We'll keep it simple for our first time out.

If you're bored and want to get on the air - or just listen, try one of the State QSO parties.  During a QSO party, in state participants try to make as many contacts in as many of the other 50 states, plus Canadian provinces as possible.  Out of state participants try to make as many contacts in as many of the state counties as possible.  It means a lot of people are calling CQ.  Those coming up include:

Weekend of 11 April:  New Mexico, North Dakota, Georgia

  Weekend of 18 April:  Michigan

  Weekend of 25 April:  Florida

Weekend of 2 May:  7th Call area QSO Party (Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming); New England QSO Party (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont); Delaware QSO Party, Indiana QSO Party

Weekend of 9 May:  Arkansas QSO Party.

If you would like more information on the above QSO parties and other contests (rules, times, etc) go to

https://www.contestcalendar.com/contestcal.html

You will be able to click on any particular contest and follow links to the contest website.

If you are interested in contesting, but don't have a good contesting log, you may want to check out N3FJP's logging software page.

https://www.n3fjp.com/index.html

He has developed contest logs designed to specifically support each of the various contests.  He does charge for the software.  I paid the $50 which allows me to download any or all of the logs (a really good buy compared to buying each separately).  I don’t own stock in this, I don't get a commission, but I believe it goes for a good cause.

Hi Doug,

I am sorry I am back to bother you again.  My current problem involves getting my log to Lawrence, K4ETD.  I am not having any luck in locating his e-mail address or the earlier e-mail from him soliciting logs.  I do not know how that “Groups.io posting stuff” works either.  I hope you might be able to forward my log to him.  Thanks Doug.

Join us for the Charlotte Amateur Radio Society's "Meeting-on-the-Air" on the WX4E Repeater.
We will gather around the glow of our radios at 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 9th.

Dave Weinstein is preparing a topic for the meeting and he will post any supporting materials on our groups.io page.
Dave will also announce the format for this meeting, which should include role call/check-in procedure and the opportunity for questions from the membership.
