New Hams - A guide to getting started in amateur radio

Upgrading your rubber duck or adding an outdoor antenna for your handheld.

Do you want to add a little more performance to your handheld radio?  You might consider replacing the rubber duck antenna.  Many hams add an external antenna mounted outdoors or in the attic, which can plug into the handheld for use at home.  Here are a few links to get you started.

Replacement for the rubber duck

Here are several outdoor antenna options:

Local ham Charley Coulter's aluminum J-pole antenna for 2m / 70cm -

Ed Fong's TBJ-1 antennas

The antenna farm offers a nifty mobile to base conversion kit.

Looks like we have a couple of laptops that can be used for logging.  We need to wait for Duwain to get back from his cruise.
Maybe we can meet in my conference room on Tuesday, January 14th. But  I'll leave the final date and location to David Shelton
since he is going to work the magic on the laptops.

Excellent point, Jim.

Here's three options worth exploring:

One good upgrade option from a rubber duck.  Made by the hams that run hamstudy.org

https://signalstuff.com/antennas/

Ed Fong holds patents and offers some inexpensive options as well.  Proceeds go to support his grad students.

https://edsantennas.weebly.com/

A third inexpensive option for a gain antenna.  Use any of the quality mobile antennas, a mobile to base conversion kit, and a mount or mast to get some elevation .  Easy to get around 6 dB gain on UHF for a reasonable cost.

https://www.theantennafarm.com/catalog/antenna-accessories-481/mobile-antenna-to-base-kits-483/

Final thought.  Special attention needs be paid to get from sma male or female to any of the other coax/antenna connections.  Premade conversion cables can be found on ebay and other places

Simple to make or inexpensive to purchase antennas to improve VHF/UHF range.

The first post is about handheld, repeaters and VHF operations.  What do you think should come next?
