THANK YOU!

I see a number of people are willing to help us with our Emergency Communications Test on Saturday, April 24th.

If you want to visit one of our four (4) locations, I will have the address and google maps links posted in the next few days.

If you want to help us range test our portable stations by driving to various locations and using your hand-held radio, that would be great.  The range testing is targeting distances of 4 to 8 miles from each of the portable stations.
You can also work us from your mobile or home station.

Here is the VHF/ UHF Exchange -
    • Callsign

    • Gridsquare Location (6 digits)

    • Type of rig – Handheld, Mobile, Base Station

    • Power output

  • Bob: Green Control, KC1MAM

  • Release the Push to Talk on your radio and listen for control., Control will manage any pile-ups by directing nodes to check-in by callsign.

  • GC:  Green Control to KC1MAM, go ahead with your check-in

  • Bob: This is KC1MAM, operating from EL86WW on my Base Station at 50 watts, How Copy ?

  • GC: KCM1MAM this is Green Control, I copy location EL86WW and using Base Station at 50 watts. Your signal is loud and clear with no interference, Thank you for your check-in, Green Control K4xyz is Clear.

  • Bob: Readback is correct, KC1MAM is clear and standing by.

We will have specific times that we are operating on VHF and UHF simplex frequencies.  A separate post will be made indicating the times and frequencies uses at each of our four portable stations.

Thank you for sharing this Don.  We will miss Charlie's dry wit often shared at the ELKS.  And we will especially miss his knowledge of antennas.  I wonder how many of his aluminum J-Poles are in our area?

It is with sadness that I have to announce that Charles 'Chuck' Coulter, K9MZN, became a silent key last Wednesday.  Chuck was well known in the amateur radio community for his home made J-pole antennas.  I talked briefly with his daughter this evening after she reached out to us.  He was hospitalized with pneumonia late March and was not able to recover.

He had requested military burial at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72 in Sarasota.  The service will be on Wednesday, April 28, at 11:30 am.

These pictures are of the power converter and a 3-D printed box my son made for it. I have made this up to power my Raspi from a 13.8vdc source and step down to 5.2vdc. This power converter setup also incorporates an on/off switch I installed so I don't have to plug/unplug the micro usb power plug from the Raspi all the time. If anyone is interested please let me know. My son can print these boxes on demand.

I attended lunch at Perkins with our usual group. My take on it was: We had our own private room.  It was a lot less noisy and we were better able to have conversations about our favorite subject. (I never could at the Elks because of the noise level). The food selection was outstanding and although Doug said he was just going to have pie, he knew it would catch up with him and decided to eat healthy. The prices were similar to the Elks.   As I live in North Port, it was more centrally located. In summary, I really like the new venue and I'm more likely to attend on a regular basis.

Friday Lunch Gatherings

As many of you know, the ELKS recently changed their policy regarding the non-member's ability to pay their own bill.
The ELKS has long had a policy in place that requires payment from members only.  However, the decision to enforce this policy poses some inconvenience for the general amateur community if they are not members.

On the sunshine net, Duwain W8JJV held an informal survey and the overwhelming majority suggested Perkins in Port Charlotte.
Let's gather at Perkins on Friday mornings at 11:00 am.  Perkins has a large room in the back that will comfortably seat all of us.

Best of all --- Perkins has Pie!!
